This week's tRicky T-Day trick is more of the same old thing - get it and hold it - this time with a dumbbell. I used to hate to pick up the dumbbell, so just the fact that I am doing it willingly in the video is a good trick. Mom read or saw somewhere that you could backchain the retrieve by putting the object in something and starting there - the dog picks it up and then eventually learns to bring it back. You'll see that mom is not very good at keeping to her criteria (or perhaps she's not sure what her criteria is) and we go from picking it up and trying to put it back in the bowl to bringing it to her hand. Oh well, I am smart and can handle the confusion - LOL!
Gotta zoom!

OK, I'm impressed. That's like three tricks in one. Go pick something up, hold, and drop it.
Is the dumbbell heavy? All I can think of is the one you get to lift weights.
No, the dumbbell isn't heavy - it's one that I could use for obedience if I ever start learning the exercises for the Open level.
Well done Ricky!
Eva will never get the concept of drop it. She'll drop it but sneakily pick it up before we do again! sigh :S
Well, you holding the dumbell so nicely and that for my dogs is really hard. They will retrieve all day long, but the holding it nicely, wihthout chomping it is where we need improvement. Good job!
I WISH I could get Marge to hold her dumbell like that. All she does is chew on it...
I am so excited you used that method, we are trying to make our video of pick up your toys and we used that method and it worked so well, I had not thought of it for a dumb bell.
Ricky is soooo smart, FANTASTIC!
Ricky, you are probably the cutest dumbbell holder I've ever seen! The way you pick it up and stare at your mom just makes me smile! Excellent work!!
Ever thought of doing competition obedience?
Good job Ricky!
My dad almost knocked out one of the lights at the club throwing me one of those dumbbells once, haha.
Ricky...good job! Mom has been thinking about having us learn how to pick up and put away our toys, but had no idea how to start. So, thank you for giving her a method to try and hopefully we will be like Kathy being able to clean up after ourselves.

Oh Ricky - I know how hard learning this can be! People think it looks easy but actually leaning to hold a dumbbell was also one of the hardest tricks for me to learn! Especially as the people at my old Obedience club back in Auckland wanted Hsin-Yi to use the old-fashioned methods to teach me (like forcing it into my mouth - I hated it!) but she ignored them and used clicker - and managed to get me picking it up happily! You look like you're doing great! :-)
