tRicky T-Day!

I know we usually do our tRicky T-Day on Thursdays but mom said she would be too busy to help me this Thursday so we had better do it today! We put together a little video showing you my limited progress with retrieving the dumbbell. I am going to get it and bringing it about half-way back but seem to be like those people who can't walk and chew gum at the same time! I can't hold it and walk at the same time! LOL! Forget about holding it and sitting. Mom has tried to get me to do that and I can't! Any advice?

My leg is the same we think. I am not allowed to jump or do stairs (mom has been carrying me up and down most of the time but it's pretty difficult in a tri-level house - stairs to go to bed and the computer room, stairs to the kitchen, stairs to go outside). I am still going on walks and doing some very minimal playing (no jumping). Diana suggested heat 3 times a day so we are doing that. We contacted my vet but haven't seen her for an exam yet. We're hoping for that soon - she said she would have to see me to get a better idea if it is knee, hip, back, or leg. One thing mom realized is that for a long time now when she brushes me, I twitch that right leg and pull it up closer to my body. She thought I was being a weirdo and never dreamed that I could be injured. Until I stopped jumping the other day, that is the only sign I ever gave her of anything being wrong and she didn't really see it. It hasn't been too bad to rest the past two days because it has been raining here. It will be harder when the weather gets nicer again.

Gotta zoom!

Well done on the trick. Do you drop it halfway when you are playing catch with balls or your toys?
I would have thought that the dumbell would be the same, but maybe it's heavier?
I really hope nothing too serious is wrong with your leg. We'll keep praying for you :)

I dont know anything about retrieves and stuff. I hope someone has some advice for you.

I hope you find about Ricky's leg. How do I deal with rest? Lots of different types of bones. LOL Diana

Your getting it, Ricky. Keep practicing and before you know it you will be a pro.

We are still keeping our paws crossed, you in our prayers that nothing is drastically wrong that a little R&R wont' fix.

Oreo has a real hard time doing two things at once also. Still working on that roll up in a blanket trick......will we ever get it?

Working dogs are real good at hiding their pain. Especially when play is involved. I hope all Ricky needs is some rest.

Oreo has lots of issues with his back toes. That is always the area where he is hurting the most. He never tells ME! But he always lets our TCVM vet know. I think they get jammed up from all the jumping.

Oh no...are you okay? Does that mean you will not be at our trial this weekend?

Have you ever taken a retrieve class at CATC? If not, I would recommend doing that. We took Sagira through it and it wasn't that bad. It looks like you got a good start, just practice hold it for longer and reward as soon as you say out.

Looks like that is coming along nicely, I love watching Ricky work he has such a cute expression., I was trying to look in my click and retrieve book-which is a book I LOVE and SG's next course is going to have a big section on teaching retrieves so I am anxious to hear about how she teaches that....but until that time, I am not that much help....

I have a really good (not too long) article thingy about training the retrieve, I found it really helpful. If you want me to send it to you my email address is emilyobrien03 at hotmail.com, send me an email and I'll forward it to you :) I think you're doing pretty good though!

Well we don't know about the retrieve at all. Maizey hasn't ever even fetched things, although magnus loves that game already and will toddle back to me with a tennis ball. Maybe he will be my "retriever". LOL

Just wanted to say sorry your laid up, that is no fun at all! You must be a brave boy to not tell your mom your'e hurt! Feel better soon!

I can't multi-task either, Ricky! It took me ages to learn to retrieve properly - and now, I often still drop things out of my mouth on my way back to Hsin-Yi!

Hsin-Yi found one thign which helped was to play Tug with the object when I got back to her - so then I would be more motivated to a) keep a firm grip with my mouth and b) actually take it all the way back to her! - so maybe you can try this, if you like to play Tug. I LOVE to play Tug and so it's often used as a reward for me - and to motivate me to keep things in my mouth! :-)
