Crash

This evening we went out to do just a little jumping with two jumps - it was dusk but still light enough to see. I did all of my warm up stuff - heeling, tricks, cookie stretches - and then some foundation recalls over one jump. Then I did two jumps straight in a row, then a few 270's and then jump, forward parallel send (as if in a pinwheel) and back to the first jump. I was flying back to the first jump and crashed over it - knocked the bar and face planted and almost somersaulted. I got right up and came for my treat and mom gave me some and then had me jump again - which I did fine. I went on to do a few more jumps including some doubles.

BUT now mom is worried. Why did I crash that jump so spectacularly? Was is bad lighting, was I going too fast, was it a fluke, am I hurting, is there something wrong with my eyesight? I used to never ever knock bars. Now I am more excited doing agility and go faster (especially in my own backyard). Do I just need to learn how to manage my faster speed? I know lots of dogs drop bars but most don't seem to land on their face!

Gotta zoom!

Lizzie does that because she just gets so into were she is going she and is excited and forgets to think about what she is doing, we have had some pretty spectacular crashes with jumps flying every which way, I really hate when that happens because it looks so horrible, I wonder if that is the deal, hope that is all it is, but it would make sense going faster and being more excited he might have not thought about his take off spot as well, or were you cueing anyting where if he was going a tad faster then you are used to and your cue was a tad late maybe he was trying to alter his path a little too late ad being more excited then usual if he had a little more oomph then he anticipated???? glad it sounds like Ricky jumped up and kept the big goal in mind....TREATS! I will keep my fingers crossed that is all it is! BE CAREFUL RICKY, but not too carful the new excitement sounds like a lot of fun!

I understand your worry. But Miley crashes jumps a lot too. I think she is just trying to get where she is going faster and thinks the sooner she takes off the faster she will get there. Which makes her crash the jump. I would probabaly rest him a couple days if you are worried.

I don't know how to make you feel better about Ricky's crash. I've never had a dog that crashed jumps until Dare. It's a helpless, sick kind of a feeling when you're watching it happen. Then I go through the whole process of wondering if she's hurt herself, or what I'm even thinking considering agility with her if I can't help her jump better.

Since Ricky doesn't really have a habit of crashing jumps, I'd be inclined to think it might have been what you mentioned, lighting of his speed. I don't think it's going to be something that you'll see a lot.

At least I hope.

I'm sorry that I don't have any advice on the crash. I hope it turned out to be a freak thing. Layla hasn't crashed a jump (yet), but she did misjudge the space and got stuck in a PVC wing once. She freaked out and started running, but was too scared to run so basically she was just thrashing on the ground, but too fast for me to try and help her. She was clearly panicking and I couldn't do anything to help her since she wouldn't sit still! I hope it turns out to be nothing. Since you did more jumps afterward with no bad effects, I don't think it was caused by you being hurt. I think it'd either be lighting or just misjudgment of speed. Good luck!!

Heavens Ricky! I bet you just misjudged, what with your new speed and all. Lots of really fast dogs get sort of careless and just run really fast and knock bars...you're a more thoughtful runner, so I'm sure this is a fluke. Hope your face feels OK!

I don't think you have to worry about the crash. It could be just a one-off. It could be the poor lighting and Ricky going faster each time. He probably hasn't been able to adjust his speed.

Sizzle did that a lot when he first started jumping, he only one speed and does not know how to control himself when turn, so he knocked bar and sometimes hit his face on the bar ...

I am sure Ricky will soon learn how to adjust his speed. Have you watch Susan Solo's DVD? That is very good to teach your dog to jump. I have recently done that and to my surprised most of my dogs do not know how to jump properly!!!

Hi Ricky - glad to hear that you weren't hurt! I think sometimes accidents just happen - especially when you're a doggie that likes to zoom everywhere!! Hee! Hee! :-)

I can understand why your mom would be worried with what you just went through. Hmm..that is a tough one. Hopefully it is just nothing and kind of a weird one time thing that happened.

Sorry that I don't have any advice on it. I just hope it's nothing serious and it's only because of the poor lighting and you zoom too fast! Don't you know that you really zoom these days, fast like a lightning?

Oreo has done a face plant or two in his day (usually going for the ball), but usually gets up and says, "I meant to do that!" He has crashed a bar or two at home, I always chalk it up to him hitting an uneven patch of ground. That's what usually makes me crash.

I wouldn't worry much, unless he's showing signs of stiffness this morning.

We don't do agility, but do running sports (carting and sledding). As long as it is a one off event, we would not worry about it. We all can mis-step and just have a crash.

If it only happened once, I'm sure you don't have to worry about it. Mika has done that a couple times in the past, but it's never turned into a problem. :)

I crash sometimes - just not thinking, i think. yesterday I turned too tight and cut my face on one of thise screws in the jump posts. Mom doesn't like those kind of jumps, and we hope our club replaces them. she always wondered if that could happen.

Summit has crashed his share of jumps. Sometimes footing, lighting, or he's just not thinking about jumping (excitement). Then there are the crashes cause by me (cueing too tight a turn). I think it happens to all dogs and some more than others.

Lyric totally took out a jump this weekend, just a freak thing. I bet he'll be fine.
