A Saturday Story

Last Saturday afternoon, mom and I were vacuuming the house - well, I was technically not vacuuming as I had been barking and carrying on and mom got tired of that and put me on a down-stay in the upstairs hallway. Any way, then, mom was vacuuming in the dining room and all of a sudden, she turns the machine off and starts exclaiming excitedly about something she saw out of the window. I can't see it because I am still doing my down-stay. Mom runs past me, grabs her camera, runs past me again and takes some photos. First she took a few photos out of the window and then she ran downstairs and outside and took more photos. What did she see? A deer!

That deer was trying to weave!

Then the deer jumped over into our neighbors yard:

Back into our yard and over to the terriers yard:

Mom climbed the fence to the terriers yard too because the deer jumped into yet another neighbor's yard and mom was going to open the gate for her to get out. Then my terrier neighbors came blasting out of their house and the deer jumped back into my yard and disappeared out the front yard. It was 3:40 in the afternoon! Poor deer must've been hungry and confused. We don't live in the country, you know. Definitely city suburb. We are in a neighborhood of over 200 houses, mostly fenced in yards. We are a 1/2 a mile from a major highway and lots of other busy roads. But near the highway is a railroad track and we think the deer hang out along there and every once in awhile make their way up into our backyards.

Pretty exciting, huh? Well, I didn't see any of it. Mom was outside talking to our neighbor about the deer for at least 10 minutes. When she finally came back inside, she fully expected to see me standing at the door waiting for her. But where was I? Still in the hallway on my down-stay!!

Gotta zoom!

WOW! Ricky!!! We are so amazed and impressed by your down stay! NO WAY would Katie wait that long for permission to get up! YOU ARE AWESOME! Especially to share your yard and your weave poles with that big ole deer-dog! LOL!

You were still in a down stay? Oh my! My dogs are pathetic.

What great photos of the deer doing weave poles! Now that is something I've never seen before, and we have lots of deer here. Although, usually we catch sight of them early in the morning, not mid afternoon!

Wow - a deer in your backyward! That is amazing! Especially as you don't live in the country! And how cute that it was trying to do the weave poles - hah! "Deer Agility"!

Glad the poor thing got away. And wow! That is an AWESOME Down Stay, Ricky!

Thats amazing that Ricky can stay in a down stay even with the vaccum. Impressive. The deer was impressive too but Ricky has the deer beat. Diana

OMG, so the reward for holding the down stay was missing the deer, LOL? What a good boy and how exciting to see a deer so close, and doing the weaves to boot.

You are so awesome Ricky! My dogs would never have held their downstay with all that commotion going on. Mine would have been like..."Hmmm, mom's distracted, do as you please." LOL

Very cool that your mom was fast enough to get the camera and get back out for pictures before the deer disappeared.

Gosh, Ricky! That entire post is impressive. especially the part about you holding the down/stay. I would of gotten up as soon as mom left. I just know I would. And the agility deer - wow! we get deer here in our neighborhood, in the city, from the park, but they don't jump our fence and play with our agility stuff, at least I don't think so...

WOW!! Cool piccures Ricky. I seed a deer before but that was in a park, not in my back garden!

Your Mom's obviously been working hard on your obedience too, my Mum says she wishes my down-stay was that good ;) hehe!

What a "dear" story, Ricky! heehee! I wish I could've been there to see the deer with you beclaws I've never seen one of those things but I guess I would be stuck inside with you while our moms ran around snapping photos, huh? What is it with mom's and cameras, anyway? My mom is always holding her camera while walking me or when we walk with other dogs b/c she's a pet sitter and she likes to report practically everything that happens to her bloggie thing.
Pretty cool that the deer was trying to become an "agility deer" though! Maybe the deer had been watching you practice & decided to try it for herself!
Hey, guess what? My mom is having a Floppy-Eared Caption Contest! Wanna join in?

Great job on the stay. Cool pics!

Wow! Layla wouldn't do a down/stay if I was vacuuming. She might consider the vacuum almost as much of an enemy as the squirrels.

I loved the deer pictures! They're widening the highway near where we live so all the deer are moving towards the developments. I feel very bad for them..
